Synopsis
_ This tale of seduction, intrigue and
trickery takes place in 18th century Spain, in the palace of the Count
Almaviva, outside Seville. It is the day of Figaro and Susanna's wedding, two
servants of the Count and Countess. The Count, having appointed Figaro as his
head servant, is now attempting to seduce his fiancée
on the day of their wedding; he has abolished his feudal right to take for
himself any girl he chooses before she marries, but Susanna is making him
change his mind.
The Count, supposedly no longer in love with his wife, attempts all sorts of antics to try to rendezvous with Susanna and get Figaro out of the way, including making her his confidential attaché when he becomes ambassador to London (which Figaro stops with an anonymous letter and feigning jumping out of a window), and trying to marry Figaro off to a woman twice his age (the age difference being no coincidence, since it transpires she is his mother). In the end, though, it is a traditional case of mistaken identity, a drunken page boy and a largesse of spirit rarely seen in womankind which provide the reconciliation between husband and wife, and, ultimately, the Marriage of Figaro...
